Omicron BA.2 subvariant will not cause another COVID surge: Expert

While India records a high number of cases due to Omicron BA.2 subvariant, a leading health expert says that it is not a cause for concern as it will not result in another COVID-19 surge in the country.

Co-Chairman of the National IMA COVID Task Force, Dr Rajeev Jayadevan, said that BA.2, a sub-lineage of Omicron, triggered the third wave in the country, adding that it cannot infect those who have previously been infected with BA.1 subvariant.

He said that BA.2 will not cause another surge, though it will be more transmissible than BA.1 and has undergone mutation to increase its transmissibility. Dr Jayadevan also said, "Omicron showed that even vaccine immunity can be easily surpassed by variants and this trend will be expected in the future as new variants arrive.”

He further stated that the virus is going to be around and will come in ups and downs for a long time to come… (HT – ANI, February 21, 2022)
